The Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems IMS in Duisburg is one of 75 Fraunhofer Institutes and research facilities throughout Germany and thus part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the leading organization for applied research in Europe. More than 32,000 employees generate an annual research volume of 3.4 billion euros, which includes 3 billion euros in contract research. 

As of 1 July 2026, 221 people work at the Fraunhofer IMS in Duisburg. This includes 171 scientific, technical, and administrative employees, 46 students, and 4 apprentices.

In mid-2026, the institute’s research budget amounted to approximately 36 million euros. Of this amount, 35 percent was funded by industry partners, 50 percent by public funding agencies, and 15 percent by the Fraunhofer Society.

The structure of Fraunhofer IMS corresponds to a matrix organization. This results in the 4 business units having optimal access to the development results of the core competencies and each business unit having optimal access to all resources and development results.
