Director of the Institute

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Axel Müller-Groeling

Axel Müller-Groeling has been a member of the IMS institute management since 2021. In parallel, he has headed the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT in Itzehoe since 2016 and is Professor for "Microsystems and Technology Transfer" at the Faculty of Technology at Christian Albrechts University (CAU) in Kiel.

Axel Müller-Groeling is a physicist who studied at the CAU and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn. He completed his doctorate at the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg and the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics there, where he also habilitated in 1997.

In 1998, he left his career in science and worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company in Berlin and Hamburg. There he managed numerous extensive projects for large industrial companies until 2005. From 2005, Axel Müller-Groeling built up Centrosolar, a listed solar company, which in 2010 had more than 1000 employees and a turnover of over 400 million euros. He was the board member for strategy and operations there.

Axel Müller-Groeling is married, has two children and lives with his family in Norderstedt near Hamburg.

Director of the Institute

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Anton Grabmaier

The family man was born in 1963 and has been working as the director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems IMS in Duisburg since 2006. Since then he is holding the chair for the field “Electronic components and circuits” at the University Duisburg-Essen as well. The physicist studied at the University of Stuttgart and specialized in semiconductor physics and measurement technology. His dissertation was focused on laser diodes. Before 2006, Prof. Dr. Anton Grabmaier worked at Siemens VDO Automotive in Regensburg, one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers for electronics and mechatronics. He led the advance development of sensors and was in charge of product development and marketing on an international level since 1999. Before that he had been working at Valeo Schalter und Sensoren GmbH in Bietigheim-Bissingen as director of sensor and cassette technology.
