Technology transfer in focus
Fraunhofer hosts terahertz and PIC workshop for research and industry
Duisburg, August 19 2025 – Under the motto »Bridging Science and Industry«, the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems IMS and the Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Technology FHR are hosting a high-profile workshop in Duisburg on December 1 and 2, 2025. The focus will be on current developments in terahertz sensor technology and photonic integrated circuits (PIC).

The aim of the workshop is to promote exchange between academic research and industrial application. Specialist presentations, discussion panels, and networking opportunities provide a framework for in-depth discussions and new collaborations. The scientific directors of the workshop are Prof. Dr. Anna Lena Schall-Giesecke (Fraunhofer IMS) and Prof. Dr. Dirk Nüßler (Fraunhofer FHR). »Only by bringing science and industry together at an early stage can we develop marketable solutions from technological innovations. That is precisely our goal with this workshop,« explains Schall-Giesecke.
A highlight of the program will be keynote speeches by internationally renowned experts from science and industry. In addition, special sessions will focus on how research results can be efficiently translated into marketable technologies. Confirmed speakers include Jeremy Witzens (RWTH Aachen & aiXscale Photonics GmbH) with a presentation on »Athermal Optical Network for On-Chip Matrix Multiplication,« Timo Jaeschke (2Pi-Labs), who will speak on »126–182 GHz Radar Sensors for Industrial Applications«, and Dimitris Tsiokos (Bialoom) with his presentation »Silicon Plasmonic Biosensors: A Universal Detection Platform for High-Throughput Diagnostics at the Point of Need.«
The workshop is aimed at researchers in photonics, electronics, high-frequency technology, and related disciplines, as well as R&D managers, start-ups, and industrial companies involved in terahertz or PIC technologies.
